In the world of Mac audio software, Rogue Amoeba stands out as a developer that consistently delivers high-quality, focused tools that just work. While their flagship apps like Audio Hijack and Loopback grab a lot of headlines, Fission is the quiet powerhouse that audio enthusiasts, podcasters, and everyday Mac users keep coming back to. If you’ve ever needed to trim a track, split a long recording, or convert formats without destroying quality, Fission is the app you’ve been looking for.
What Makes Fission Special?
Most audio editors force you into a painful workflow: import a compressed file (like MP3 or AAC), make your edits, and then re-encode it on export. That re-compression introduces quality loss every single time. Fission does things differently. It lets you edit lossy formats losslessly—meaning you can trim, cut, join, or split MP3s and AAC files without any generational degradation. It’s like magic for audio files.
Core features include:
- Lightning-fast editing — Crop, trim, fade in/out, adjust gain, normalize volume, and remove unwanted sections with simple selections.
- Smart Split & File Joining — Automatically split long recordings based on silence (perfect for digitizing LPs or podcasts), or easily combine multiple files.
- Batch Conversion — Convert dozens of files at once to MP3, AAC, Apple Lossless, FLAC, AIFF, or WAV.
- Advanced goodies — Full FLAC and WAV support, chapterized AAC/MP3 for enhanced podcasts, cue sheet support, inline gain adjustments, and direct iPhone ringtone creation.
- Metadata editing and clean, uncluttered waveform view.

The interface is deliberately simple—no bloated toolbars or steep learning curves. Open a file, make your changes, and save. It’s designed for speed so you can get back to what matters.

Using Fission in the Studio
I use a Tascam rack mount audio recorder to capture my analog console output to stereo mixes. I normally record “Masters” directly to WAV files and often at 24-bit / 192k because it just sounds smoother to my old analog ears. When I do my mixing job right, the only thing left is to trim and adjust the front and back ends of the track. I have a lot of programs which can do this but I choose Fission because it is so simple, it’s sample accurate and it’s fast.

After loading in a file I use the Zoom tool (right on the front panel) to zoom WAY in and then I trim the front end of a file, leaving a 0.40-second empty space at the beginning of digital files to be released on Apple Music, Spotify and others. At the end of the file I often use the “Fade Out” control (also right there on the front panel). Here’s a hint about Fade Out, if it sounds too fast you’re probably selecting too small of an area. Command-Z to undo and try again. I encourage experimentation to gain familiarity with all the controls: Good news, there are not many controls to learn LOL.
Another frequently used command is “Insert Silence” which lives under the Tools Menu at the top of the screen. After I get my IN and OUT points set and my Fade Out set right I use the Insert Silence command to give me just the right amount of digital black to finish the file blank spaces at the beginning and end.
Other Studio Uses - I use these all the time
- Trim / Adjust Mp3 files (without recompressing)
- Tweak Meta Tags
- Add artwork
- Add track numbers
- Add Copyright information
- Convert High Resolution WAV files to Mp3
Recent Updates Keep It Fresh
As of early 2026, Fission is at version 2.9.4 (released March 2026), with full support for macOS 11 through macOS 26 (Tahoe). The 2.9 update brought a refreshed interface, updated app icon, improved visuals (especially the light theme with gold accents), better accessibility, and ongoing polish.
Rogue Amoeba’s commitment to supporting the latest macOS while keeping the app snappy is impressive.
Perfect Companion for Podcasters and More
Fission shines as a post-production partner for Audio Hijack recordings. Record your podcast, trim out mistakes or dead air in Fission, add chapters, and export. It’s also great for:
- Cleaning up Music app downloads
- Removing commercials from recorded streams
- Splitting album rips into individual tracks
- Creating custom ringtones
HEAR IT IN ACTION
The Mark King Radio album titled "Intersection" and all the subsequently released tunes on Apple Music, Spotify and other music outlets were individually finished with Fission. Point your listening device at Mark King Radio (our band) on your favorite service to hear Fission at work. In particular, check out the nice start at the beginning of each song and the fadeouts at the end, all Fission!
Pricing & Availability
Fission is a one-time purchase of $35 USD for a license that works on multiple Macs for a single user. Upgrades from older versions are just $15. There are convenient bundles too, like the Fission + Audio Hijack combo ($83, saving $20) or the Ultimate Podcast Bundle.
You can download a fully functional trial from the Rogue Amoeba website (with trial limitations applied). It’s Mac-only and runs great on both Intel and Apple Silicon.
Why Fission Belongs in Your Mac Toolbox
I've been using Fission since it first came out and it has only gotten better, not bigger or more bloated with rarely used features. In an era of subscription fatigue and overly complex pro tools, Fission delivers exactly what most people need: fast, reliable, high-quality audio editing without the hassle. It’s elegant, affordable, and made by a developer (Rogue Amoeba) known for responsive support and thoughtful software. There license allows a studio owner to install it on several computers (I have it on my main desktop and on my main DAW).
Whether you’re a podcaster, musician, audiophile digitizing old media, or just someone who occasionally needs to edit an audio file, Fission will quickly become one of your favorite utilities.
Highly recommended. Head over to rogueamoeba.com/fission to grab the trial and see for yourself. Tell the “High on Technology” sent you ;-)
