I burned roughly 6 man-hours over a couple of days troubleshooting every possible setting, restart, permission, and software combination I could think of. It was constantly sitting on my mental back burner, killing my flow. Turns out the entire problem was a wrong USB-C cable.
Once I replaced the low bandwidth USB-C to USB-C with a proper USB 3.0-rated cable the Elgato HD60 X instantly came to life.
Still a Strong Choice in 2026?
You have lots of options for streaming HDMI video. The HD60 X remains a solid, well-supported external capture card that works great with Mac. Supposedly it also works with Windows and gives even more options but I have NO experience with that Operating System.
My Setup
I’m feeding clean HDMI from a budget 4-input video switcher into the HD60 X, then into my M2 Mac Mini running OBS to broadcast our Mark King Radio stream. If I had it to do over, I would spend a bit more and go with the Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini video mixer, but that’s a story for another day. This review is focused on the Elgato HD60 X.
Real-World Performance
The USB cable that connects the HD60X to the Mac also provides power to the Elgato box. Once I connected the HD60X to my M2 Mac mini with a USB-3 cable my 1080p60 stream came to life and looks very nice — vibrant colors, good contrast, sharp detail, and clean delivery with almost no compression artifacts. We’ve been monitoring the output on a variety of computers, monitors, and phones. The stream has remained reliable, smooth and contiguous.

HD60X INPUTS AND OUTPUTS
The Elgato converter is a small flat black plastic box. On the rear is an HDMI input, an HDMI output (pass-through of the HDMI signal) which connects to your monitor. Also on the rear is a single USB-C connection point which feeds to your computer sending the stream output.
A 3.5mm stereo line level jack on the front can be used to feed analog audio stream into the HD60X which mixes with the HDMI audio. I have not been using this jack but I intend to experiment with it. OBS software provides other ways to bring audio into your stream too.
Recording Options
- Main method: Record directly inside OBS Studio
- Alternative: Elgato’s 4K Capture Utility on Mac
- Quick option: QuickTime Player
All straightforward and no extra cost.
Size, Weight & Build
Super compact and lightweight:
- 4.4” × 2.83” × .75”
- 3.21 ounces in weight
It basically disappears on the desk. It is so light weight that the weight of the HDMI connection cables can pull it off the desk if you’re not careful.
Price
Currently selling for $120–$150. The video output looks really good and this current price is quite a bit less than competing boxes from other brands.
Reliability for 24/7 Broadcasting
This was my biggest concern going in. Since getting the right cable, the HD60 X has handled our 24/7 operation very well. The stream stays stable and consistent, which is exactly what I need as our content evolves.
We started with funny videos, but the program is now leaning more toward sharing our beautiful Florida park-like farm in a realtime live view — complete with a lake and wildlife including four varieties of ducks, herons, egrets, and osprey. This kind of evolving, flexible live broadcast needs gear that stays out of the way, and the HD60 X is doing exactly that.
Elgato Support
In trying to solve my problem I contacted Elgato through their support portal. I did trouble shooting with their AI and then sent an email for more specifics. I got an automated message which said it could be 48 hours before I get a response. About six hours later I received an email from Elgato support which mentioned replacing the USB cable. By the time I received their response I had already replaced the faulty cable and was streaming live. I thanked them and suggested they add the USB cable swap to their AI troubleshooting help.
Final Verdict
If you’re a Mac user running 24/7 OBS broadcasts and need straightforward, high-quality HDMI capture from a switcher or some other source of HDMI, the Elgato HD60 X is a strong performer — once you connect it to your computer with the right USB-C cable. It took me way longer than it should have to figure that out, but now that it’s working, it has become a reliable part of my broadcast setup.
The picture quality is excellent for 1080p60 streaming, and the whole thing just gets out of the way so I can focus on the content we’re sending out into the world.
ELGATO HD60X = Highly recommended
